How Do Umbilical Cord Stem Cells Work?
Unlike some other cell therapies that involve direct cell replacement, umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hu-MSCs) act as biological messengers. When infused via IV or injection, these cells are thought to:
- Hone in on damaged or inflamed tissues, drawn by distress signals released by the body.
- Help regulate immune responses
- Release anti-inflammatory molecules such as Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (TGF-β)
- Secrete growth factors like Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) to stimulate tissue regeneration and repair.
Why There’s No Risk of DNA Transfer
Despite originating from umbilical cord tissue, hu-MSCs do not permanently implant themselves into your body or alter your genetic makeup. Here’s why:
1. No Genetic Integration
hu-MSCs have their own DNA, but they do not fuse with your cells or modify your genetic material. Instead, they communicate through paracrine signaling—a process that sends molecular instructions to help your body heal itself.
2. Short-Lived in the Body
Infused hu-MSCs do not survive beyond a limited period in your body. After they release their healing factors, they are naturally cleared by the immune system.
3. No Risk of Microchimerism
Some patients worry about foreign DNA lingering in their system. While small traces of donor DNA may be temporarily present in the bloodstream, they are rapidly broken down and eliminated. There is no evidence that hu-MSC therapy leads to long-term foreign DNA persistence.
4. Immune-Privileged & Safe
Unlike organ transplants, which require a genetic match, hu-MSCs are immune-privileged. This means they lack the markers that typically trigger immune rejection, making them safe for use in a wide range of patients, regardless of genetic background.
